North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged deeper cooperation during talks in Pyongyang. The meeting signaled renewed deeper ties between the longtime allies. Xi’s trip marked his first visit to North Korea in seven years. It also coincided with the 65th anniversary of the bilateral friendship treaty.
During Monday’s summit, Kim and Xi agreed to expand cooperation across multiple sectors. These sectors included politics, the economy, culture and security. Moreover, both leaders reaffirmed support for each other’s sovereignty and national interests. They also highlighted their shared socialist identity and longstanding partnership.
Kim described relations with Beijing as a key strategic priority for Pyongyang. Furthermore, he praised China’s development achievements under Xi’s leadership. He also reiterated support for Beijing’s One China principle. Meanwhile, Xi reaffirmed support for North Korea’s development path. He additionally called for broader cooperation in trade, agriculture, healthcare and infrastructure.
Notably, statements released after the summit did not mention denuclearization. In contrast, previous meetings often included references to North Korea’s nuclear program. Consequently, analysts viewed the omission as a notable diplomatic signal. They said it reflected changing priorities in bilateral relations.
Experts said the summit highlighted deeper ties as North Korea strengthens cooperation with Russia. At the same time, Pyongyang continues to rely heavily on China economically. Analysts believe Beijing wants to maintain influence over North Korea. Additionally, China appears determined to prevent excessive North Korean dependence on Moscow.
Chinese accounts of the meeting emphasized practical cooperation and economic exchanges. They highlighted transportation links, trade expansion and border connectivity. North Korean accounts focused more on political solidarity and regime legitimacy. Nevertheless, both sides stressed the importance of long-term cooperation.
On Tuesday, Xi and Kim visited the China-DPRK Friendship Tower in Pyongyang. Their wives joined the visit honoring Chinese soldiers from the Korean War. The event reinforced shared historical ties and symbolized deeper ties between both countries.
Looking ahead, observers expect stronger economic engagement and diplomatic coordination. As a result, the summit could reshape regional dynamics across Northeast Asia. It may also intensify strategic competition among major regional powers.
