China has built approximately 120,000 quality datasets, according to the National Data Administration on Saturday. This milestone reflects the country’s ongoing push to expand high-value data resources nationwide. Consequently, officials highlighted significant progress across scientific research, industrial manufacturing and healthcare sectors.
Indeed, these quality datasets reached a combined volume exceeding 1,565 petabytes by the end of June. Moreover, this figure marks a substantial increase of more than 60 percent since the first quarter. To put this scale in perspective, the volume equals roughly 547 times the National Library of China’s entire digital collection. Therefore, this growth demonstrates how rapidly China’s data infrastructure continues expanding.
Furthermore, seven pilot cities have played a central role in supporting this data expansion effort. These cities include Chengdu in Sichuan, Shenyang in Liaoning, Hefei in Anhui and Changsha in Hunan. Together, they have driven data annotation scale beyond 119 petabytes through coordinated regional efforts. Additionally, roughly 140,000 workers currently support annotation tasks across these seven pilot locations. As a result, these cities have become essential hubs for processing and labeling data at scale.
This expansion of quality datasets carries significant implications for China’s broader technology and innovation goals. Since high-value data underpins artificial intelligence development, stronger datasets could accelerate progress across multiple industries. Meanwhile, healthcare and manufacturing sectors stand to benefit directly from more refined, structured information. Additionally, robust data annotation infrastructure creates substantial employment opportunities within designated pilot regions.
Looking ahead, China appears committed to further scaling its quality datasets through continued regional investment. Given the rapid quarterly growth already observed, officials likely expect this momentum to continue. Ultimately, this data expansion effort positions China to strengthen its position within global data-driven industries.
