China and Sri Lanka reaffirmed their bilateral cooperation during a high-level meeting in Beijing on Tuesday. President Xi Jinping met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, who attended the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women. The two leaders discussed expanding economic, security, and diplomatic collaboration between their nations.
During the talks, Xi highlighted the long-standing friendship between China and Sri Lanka. He emphasized that both nations should work together to enhance bilateral cooperation, build a shared future, and bring tangible benefits to their citizens.
Xi noted that China aims to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Sri Lanka. He outlined new areas for partnership, including port economy, modern agriculture, green energy, digital transformation, and tourism. These sectors could boost economic growth and strengthen regional integration.
Moreover, Xi called for closer collaboration in law enforcement and security. He urged joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes such as online fraud and gambling, which have affected both nations. This cooperation, he said, is vital for maintaining public safety and trust.
The two countries also agreed to deepen coordination under multilateral platforms, including the United Nations. Xi stressed that China and Sri Lanka should safeguard the shared interests of developing nations and strengthen the voice of the Global South in international discussions.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed appreciation for China’s continued partnership and support. She reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing the Belt and Road Initiative and welcomed expanded trade and investment opportunities. According to her, such efforts align with Sri Lanka’s development goals and economic recovery strategy.
Amarasuriya added that China’s four global initiatives hold great significance amid current global challenges. She expressed confidence that joint efforts between the two countries would lead to sustainable growth and stability in the region.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended the meeting, underscoring China’s strong diplomatic engagement with South Asia. Analysts expect that the renewed bilateral cooperation will open new avenues for trade, infrastructure, and technology exchange.
Both sides plan to continue high-level discussions and implement concrete projects under the Belt and Road framework. Their partnership aims to reinforce mutual trust, strengthen connectivity, and foster long-term regional prosperity.
