China’s National Meteorological Center continued issuing weather alerts Sunday as torrential rainfall swept across multiple regions nationwide. Officials warned of heavy rain, severe convective weather and elevated geological disaster risks simultaneously. Consequently, authorities ordered nationwide inspections as the country entered its critical flood season period.
Indeed, forecasters expect torrential rainfall to continue from Sunday night through Monday across several provinces. These include Yunnan, Guangxi and Hubei, where conditions remain particularly severe during this period. Meanwhile, four government departments jointly issued a notice strengthening geological disaster prevention measures nationwide. This notice followed deadly landslides in Gansu and Chongqing that exposed serious inspection shortcomings. Tragically, the Gansu landslide killed 21 people, while Chongqing’s disaster left 8 dead and 34 missing.
Furthermore, officials acknowledged that routine inspections failed to detect early warning signs adequately beforehand. Although rainfall had eased somewhat since last Tuesday, Guangxi maintained its Level I emergency response. Local authorities urged stronger monitoring, embankment inspections and evacuation planning to prevent secondary disasters. Additionally, all power outages caused by Typhoon Maysak in Guangxi were restored by Saturday evening. Meanwhile, cleanup efforts continued in Hengzhou and Guigang following severe flooding from the typhoon.
Looking ahead, Guangxi expects frequent heavy rain through Tuesday, with northern areas facing especially intense downpours. Local meteorological authorities warned this torrential rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides further. Therefore, the joint government notice calls for stronger safeguards in high-risk construction and groundwater areas. It also requires timely risk assessments alongside multi-channel warning systems for affected communities.
