On Saturday, several Chinese industry associations voiced strong opposition to the US’ imposition of US reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports. These measures, introduced on April 2, have sparked concerns across various sectors in China. Six major chambers of commerce, representing a wide range of industries, issued a unified declaration condemning the tariffs.
The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles (CCCT) was one of the first to respond. The chamber argued that the tariffs violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, negatively affecting global trade. It emphasized that these actions harm consumers, disrupt markets, and destabilize international commerce, including in the US.
Similarly, the China Chamber of Commerce of Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce & Animal By-Products (CFNA) expressed firm opposition. The CFNA urged unity among China’s food and agricultural export sectors to face the economic challenges brought by the US reciprocal tariffs. The chamber emphasized that all countermeasures taken by the Chinese government to defend the interests of national businesses were fully supported.
In addition, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Light Industrial and Arts Crafts (CCCLA) highlighted the widespread dissatisfaction from its member enterprises. Industries such as footwear, bags, and toys voiced their concerns, calling for action to protect their rights. The CCCLA underscored that the US reciprocal tariffs violate WTO regulations and harm global economic stability.
The China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters (CCCMC) also spoke out. The CCCMC pointed out that the tariffs undermine the multilateral trading system and damage US-China trade relations. It also warned that the additional tariffs would increase costs for American companies, leading to higher prices for US consumers and fueling inflation.
In response, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products (CIEMHP) condemned the tariffs for disrupting global pharmaceutical operations and destabilizing research and production chains.
The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products expressed confidence in China’s ability to manage external pressures. It urged industry players to unite and adopt open, cooperative strategies to sustain growth in global markets.
Across all sectors, the message was clear: China’s industry associations stand united in opposition to the US reciprocal tariffs, urging the US to seek dialogue and consultation to resolve trade tensions.
