Contract Killers Return: Mantis Expands Kill Boksoon Universe

Date:

Netflix’s upcoming action thriller “Mantis” builds on the popular 2023 film “Kill Boksoon” by focusing on a fresh generation of contract killers. Moreover, the film explores the aftermath of events triggered by Gil Bok-soon, a pivotal character from the original movie. As a result, this continuation adds depth to the world of contract killers, showcasing new rivalries and power struggles.

Director Lee Tae-sung, who co-wrote the script with Byun Sung-hyun, revealed at a recent press conference in Seoul that “Mantis” is a spin-off. Specifically, the story follows Han-ul, also known as Mantis, a top contract killer returning from a vacation. Alongside him are his trainee and rival, Jae-yi, and the retired assassin Dok-go. Thus, the film captures the tense battle for dominance in the killer organization M.K. ENT after Gil Bok-soon’s actions cause upheaval.

Lee explained that this project marked the first time he and Byun collaborated on writing a screenplay. Consequently, they carefully crafted a narrative exploring how young contract killers navigate the collapse of a once-powerful organization. This fresh perspective highlights new challenges for the industry’s rising stars.

Meanwhile, the cast prepared rigorously to bring authentic action scenes to life. Yim Si-wan, portraying Han-ul, trained extensively in wielding dual sickles, which earned his character the nickname “Mantis.” Similarly, Park Gyu-young, who plays Jae-yi, practiced with a long sword to master its fluid and powerful movements. Additionally, Jo Woo-jin, as Dok-go, trained in using tonfas but emphasized his character’s ability to adapt to any weapon, adding variety to the fight sequences.

These performances reflect the film’s commitment to showcasing unique combat styles among contract killers. Furthermore, the choreography aims to deliver visually striking and realistic action, resonating with fans of the genre. “Mantis” is scheduled for release on Netflix this Friday. Therefore, this launch continues to expand the universe introduced in “Kill Boksoon,” offering fresh narratives that delve deeper into the lives and struggles of contract killers.

The film’s release arrives amid growing global interest in Korean thrillers. In addition, it highlights Netflix’s investment in expanding local content with international appeal. As a result, industry observers expect “Mantis” to draw strong viewership and further solidify the franchise’s place in the action thriller landscape.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate more stories from this universe as filmmakers explore the complex dynamics within the contract killing world. Ultimately, “Mantis” sets the stage for possible sequels or spin-offs, sustaining momentum from the original hit. In summary, “Mantis” offers a dynamic expansion of the Kill Boksoon story. It combines fresh characters, intense action, and a compelling look at contract killers in a changing criminal world.
