Crown Prince Akishino Calls for Peace on 60th Birthday

Date:

Crown Prince Akishino marked his 60th birthday by stressing the importance of peace in a press conference. He said, “It is important for each person to think about peace,” referencing the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end.

He reflected on reaching 60 years, describing it as the completion of the kanshi, or 60-year zodiac cycle. Earlier this year, he visited Hiroshima to meet student peace ambassadors and observed them colorize photos from before and after the atomic bombing.

“This experience showed how peace can be passed on,” the Crown Prince said. He urged citizens to remember history and reaffirm that humanity must not repeat past mistakes.

Addressing ongoing global conflicts, he expressed hope for ceasefires, noting, “It pains my heart.” The Crown Prince also celebrated the 35th anniversary of his marriage to Crown Princess Kiko and praised her support.

He mentioned their son, Prince Hisahito, who is a freshman at the University of Tsukuba, sharing photos of meals he prepared. He described Hisahito as “a good conversational partner.” Regarding Princess Kako, he highlighted her expanding public duties. He also commented on becoming a grandfather through his eldest daughter, Mako Komuro.

Finally, the Crown Prince emphasized the need to scale back imperial activities due to fewer family members available for duties. He encouraged citizens to reflect on peace continuously, not only at anniversaries.
