Edamame Farmers Face Tariff Pressure Amid U.S. Policy Shift

Date:

Taiwan’s government has promised strong support for edamame farmers following the United States’ decision to postpone a steep tariff hike. The Ministry of Agriculture announced plans to help farmers adapt and protect export revenue.

On Sunday, Premier Cho Jung-tai and Agriculture Minister Chen Junne-jih met with industry leaders in Pingtung. They discussed the effects of potential U.S. tariffs on Taiwan’s frozen vegetables and edamame exports.

Premier Cho delayed the release of a detailed NT$88 billion support package by one week. He said the plan will focus on stabilizing Taiwan’s export-driven agriculture industry.

Minister Chen explained that NT$18 billion from the package will be directed toward support for edamame farmers and others in related sectors. This includes low-interest loans, cold chain upgrades, and export market diversification.

Additionally, the ministry will help farmers gain international certifications. Officials believe this will strengthen Taiwan’s competitive edge in global markets. The package also improves marketing strategies to boost both domestic and overseas sales.

Chen said the ministry will form a tariff response task force with the frozen vegetable and fruit industry. This unit will track the economic impact of U.S. tariffs. It will also create timely strategies to protect farmers and exporters.

Last year, Taiwan produced over 77,000 tonnes of edamame. Nearly half of that amount was exported. Japan remained the largest buyer, purchasing 73% of exports, while the U.S. followed with 19%.

Taiwan’s edamame export value reached nearly NT$2.98 billion. The crop generated about NT$2.3 billion in foreign exchange earnings. Officials see edamame as a vital agricultural product for Taiwan’s trade balance.

Wei Tung-chi, head of a frozen food association, raised concerns about market shifts. He warned that China may increase exports to Japan if the U.S. imposes high tariffs on Chinese goods.

As competition rises, Taiwan’s government remains focused on support for edamame farmers. With proper planning, officials believe Taiwan can protect its market position and maintain farmer incomes.

The pledge of support for edamame farmers signals a strong government commitment to agriculture, even during trade uncertainty.
