Emperor Naruhito sends condolences after Pope Francis’ passing

Date:

Emperor Naruhito sends condolences to the Vatican following the death of Pope Francis, the Imperial Household Agency announced Friday. The emperor’s heartfelt message, sent on Wednesday, expressed sympathy on behalf of himself, Empress Masako, and his parents, former Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Emperor Naruhito sends condolences directly to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who is currently leading the Vatican. This gesture highlights Japan’s deep respect toward the late pontiff, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

Moreover, Japan will send an official delegation to the pope’s funeral. Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya will represent the country at the solemn ceremony scheduled for Saturday at the Vatican. Authorities expect over 130 international delegations to attend the funeral, including 50 heads of state and 10 royal family members.

World leaders such as U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will also attend. Their presence, along with other dignitaries, will honor the legacy of the pope, whose leadership inspired many across the globe.

Emperor Naruhito sends condolences while recalling past personal ties with Pope Francis. In 2019, the emperor and the pope met during the pontiff’s historic visit to Japan. During that meeting, Emperor Naruhito expressed deep gratitude for the pope’s visits to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He also thanked him for meeting survivors of the tragic March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan.

Japan’s government and the Imperial family have always maintained warm relations with the Vatican. They have often shared messages of peace, reconciliation, and mutual respect over the years.

The pope’s passing marks a profound moment of mourning for millions around the world. Yet, it also offers an opportunity for global unity as leaders gather to pay tribute to his impactful life.

As Emperor Naruhito sends condolences, he strengthens the enduring ties of goodwill between Japan and the Vatican.
