Evergreen Marine Corp. has partnered with Chunghwa Telecom to launch smart container operations at the seventh terminal of Kaohsiung Port. This initiative marks a major step in Taiwan’s push toward port automation and digital logistics.
Previously, Evergreen operators manually verified container numbers from elevated bridge cranes. This traditional method posed safety risks and slowed operations. Now, the new system will automate those tasks, improving both safety and efficiency.
To achieve this, Evergreen integrated Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G and fiber-optic networks into its operations center at the port. This high-speed connectivity allows real-time video for remote crane operation. As a result, crane operators can now work with higher accuracy from a safer location.
Evergreen also installed new computing systems at its on-site data center. These upgrades help strengthen cybersecurity and support ongoing automation efforts. The project is part of Evergreen’s broader strategy to reduce labor costs and enable unmanned systems in the future.
Kaohsiung Port’s seventh terminal spans 149 hectares. It can handle four ultra-large container vessels at the same time. Due to its large area and heavy truck movement, maintaining a stable wireless connection proved difficult.
Metal containers also disrupted traditional Wi-Fi signals. Chunghwa Telecom solved this by deploying seven 5G base stations across the terminal. These provide reliable, full-site communication coverage despite environmental challenges.
Digital Affairs Minister Huang Yen-nun visited the upgraded terminal on Wednesday. He praised Evergreen’s innovation in launching Taiwan’s first smart container operations with integrated 5G. He emphasized that this project sets a new benchmark for digital transformation in Taiwan’s maritime sector.
Huang also confirmed the government’s plan to accelerate the rollout of 5G, AI, and IoT in logistics and other industries. He said these technologies will be vital in driving Taiwan’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Evergreen and Chunghwa showcases Taiwan’s leadership in smart container operations. It demonstrates how advanced connectivity can revolutionize port management and enhance national infrastructure.
