Final Push in South Korea Election Sharpens Rivalries

Date:

The final push in South Korea election campaigns intensified Sunday as candidates surged through rival strongholds and their hometowns. Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party revisited Gyeongsang, a conservative region long seen as unfriendly territory. Park Geun-hye recently backed People Power Party candidate Kim Moon-soo, reigniting partisan fervor. Polls suggest Lee has narrowed traditional support gaps in the region this year. That shift has changed the dynamics of the final election stretch.

Lee began the day in Andong, his birthplace and a symbolic city in North Gyeongsang Province. He told supporters he would become “a president for everyone” and not lead through division. In Daegu, he condemned supporters of Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed December 3 martial law attempt. “This election must reject the forces of insurrection,” Lee said at the rally. His evening stops included Ulsan and Busan, ahead of a final rally in Yeouido on Monday.

As part of the final push in South Korea election strategy, Lee expanded his economic pledges for regional development. On Facebook, he proposed founding the East-South Investment Bank for cities like Busan and Ulsan. He described it as a vehicle for sustainable growth and trade innovation. Lee also vowed to position Busan as a key Arctic maritime hub. His campaign focused on blending local revitalization with global economic shifts.

Meanwhile, Kim Moon-soo visited key cities across Gyeonggi Province, where he once served as governor. In Suwon, he directly attacked Lee’s legal troubles and questioned his presidential eligibility. “Your vote can restore justice,” Kim declared to a cheering crowd. He acknowledged past failures, including Yoon’s martial law crisis, and promised accountability. Kim planned final rallies in northern Seoul before ending at City Hall on Monday.

Lee Jun-seok of the New Reform Party also joined the final push in South Korea election events. He campaigned in Dongtan, Gyeonggi Province, and prepared for a nighttime rally at Seoul Station. Though polling behind the frontrunners, he pushed his anti-establishment message to younger voters. His appearance added further complexity to an already high-stakes race. The final push in South Korea election now moves into its last, most decisive hours.
