Four Taiwanese Soldiers Jailed for Leaking Classified Information to China

Date:

Four Taiwanese soldiers have been sentenced to prison for leaking classified military information to Chinese intelligence agents, raising concerns about China’s increasing infiltration efforts within Taiwan’s armed forces.

The soldiers, three of whom served in a high-security unit responsible for protecting Taiwan’s Presidential Office, were convicted on charges of espionage and breaching national security laws. A fourth soldier from the Defense Ministry’s Information and Telecommunications Command was also found guilty.

According to court statements, the defendants secretly photographed sensitive military information and provided the materials to Chinese intelligence operatives over a period spanning from 2022 to 2024. They reportedly received payments between approximately NT$260,000 and NT$660,000 (US$7,850 to US$20,000) in exchange for the leaked intelligence.

The soldiers were handed prison terms ranging from five years and 10 months to seven years, with the court stating their actions constituted a severe breach of duty and posed significant risks to national security.

The convictions come amid rising espionage concerns, prompting the Taiwanese government to take stronger measures, including plans to reinstate military judges to specifically handle espionage and national security cases involving military personnel.

The increasing frequency of espionage-related arrests highlights ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, reflecting Beijing’s intensified efforts to penetrate Taiwan’s military and government institutions.
