Gantsmod-Gashuunsukhait Railroad Project to Boost Export Capacity by 2030

Date:

Mongolia’s Cabinet confirmed plans to launch construction of the Gantsmod-Gashuunsukhait Railroad by mid-May. The Minister of Road and Transport, Delgersaikhan Borkhuu, delivered the update during a regular Cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai instructed all relevant officials to start the work by May 14.

The Prime Minister also emphasized close coordination with Chinese authorities. He urged agencies to ensure smooth customs procedures for importing equipment, construction materials, and daily supplies needed for the project.

This cross-border railroad is the first among 14 strategic projects listed in the Government of Mongolia’s 2024-2028 Action Plan. Parliament approved this plan under Resolution No. 21 of 2024. According to the government, the new railroad will reduce border-crossing times for both passengers and cargo.

Moreover, officials believe the Gantsmod-Gashuunsukhait project will enhance Mongolia’s export capacity significantly. With new terminals and improved infrastructure, the average flow of trade through border checkpoints is expected to increase.

The railroad will connect key border points, including Shiveekhuren-Sekhee and Khangi-Mandal. Planners expect this network to allow Mongolia to handle an additional 80 million tons of exports by the year 2030.

Government representatives also stated that the project would strengthen economic ties with China. The plan includes cooperation in trade, minerals, transportation, and industrial development.

Officials see the Gantsmod-Gashuunsukhait Railroad as a key step in unlocking Mongolia’s full export potential. By prioritizing export capacity in infrastructure projects, the government aims to boost national growth and regional integration.

Construction begins in May, but its long-term impact on Mongolia’s export capacity will extend well into the next decade.
