A gas station explosion in Sinuiju, North Korea, killed more than 20 people in early June. According to a source who spoke with Daily NK, authorities have since suppressed information about the incident. Officials have offered no public explanation regarding the cause or victim compensation.
The blast occurred at a state-run fuel station in the Nagwon-dong area of Sinuiju. A privately operated shuttle bus, known locally as a beoli bus, sat waiting to refuel nearby. Consequently, the explosion struck the bus directly, lifting it into the air before flames engulfed it. More than 20 passengers died instantly, while nearby vehicles and bystanders suffered additional injuries.
Right after the blast, authorities questioned the station’s operator along with several managing officials. However, they have not disclosed the cause, the sequence of events or the total damage. This gas station explosion drew little public attention partly due to timing. The Workers’ Party held its Second Plenary Session in late June, which also announced corruption charges against a senior military official.
Meanwhile, the source noted that other nations typically investigate such incidents thoroughly. Officials elsewhere would assign responsibility, arrange compensation and introduce new safety measures afterward. North Korea, by contrast, closed the case quietly following limited questioning. No follow-up measures or public acknowledgments have emerged since then.
This pattern echoes previous disasters, since North Korea routinely conceals large-scale casualties from accidents. Fires, building collapses and train accidents have all received similarly limited coverage domestically. Word of the explosion spread informally, yet officials never confirmed it.
Additionally, residents have grown frustrated watching state media cover foreign accidents extensively while ignoring domestic tragedies. Many believe authorities prioritize covering up incidents rather than investigating causes properly. The source pointed to poor facility management as a likely factor behind the explosion.
As vehicle ownership rises nationwide, gas station use continues expanding without matching safety oversight. Therefore, residents worry that neglected inspections could lead to further deadly accidents soon.
