Gasil Cathedral in Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province, has become a popular spot after appearing in the hit Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines. The touching wedding scene filmed at this historic site has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide.
On April 3, the cathedral saw an influx of visitors eager to experience its serene atmosphere. Tourists, many of whom were enjoying the spring weather, took photos under the blooming cherry blossoms. Catholic couple Kim Ji-hoon and Lee Seung-eun, both pilgrims, shared their excitement about visiting the church after its appearance in the drama. “It’s peaceful here, and now, knowing the church was featured in the drama, it feels even more special,” Kim said.
Gasil Cathedral, the oldest Catholic church in North Gyeongsang Province, holds deep historical significance. Founded in 1895, it is the second-oldest cathedral in the Daegu region. The church originally began as a five-room house, serving as a place of worship for Catholics. In 1923, the church moved to its current location. French priest Camille Pailhasse, known in Korea as Ha Gyeong-jo, was the first pastor. Father Victor Louis Poisnel designed the current building, which was constructed in Neo-Romanesque style. Gasil Cathedral was designated as a tangible cultural asset by North Gyeongsang Province in 2003.
Remarkably, Gasil Cathedral survived the Korean War. Both South and North Korean forces used the church as a field hospital during the Battle of Dabudong. In 2005, the church was renamed Gasil Cathedral.
The church is a revered pilgrimage site. Catholics who fled persecution found refuge here, crossing nearby Hanti Pass to continue their faith. Today, The Road to Hanti connects Gasil Cathedral with other important sites. The pilgrimage route was inaugurated in 2016 and is divided into five sections, earning the nickname Korea’s Camino de Santiago.
Now, Chilgok officials plan to capitalize on the cathedral’s newfound fame. They are considering installing a “filming location” marker and hosting a photo event for fans. “The drama has brought renewed attention to the cultural and historical value of Gasil Cathedral,” said Chilgok Mayor Kim Jae-wook. The local government aims to promote the area’s rich blend of history, culture, and faith through events like the Holy Festival.
