Heavy rains cause flooding across Taiwan, disrupting daily life on April 12, 2025. A weather front passed over the island, bringing torrential rain and strong winds. These conditions led to localized flooding, sinkholes, and power outages in multiple areas.
In Taoyuan, the weather system caused rainfall comparable to a typhoon. The heavy rain flooded 15 districts, with Zhongli District experiencing the worst damage. Authorities from the Department of Water Resources quickly activated their disaster response center. They coordinated with local offices to address the flooding. The municipal departments worked together to divert traffic from flooded roads. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes as conditions worsened.
Meanwhile, in Taipei’s Shilin District, a sinkhole formed at the intersection of Wenlin Road and Meilun Street. The hole was about one meter long and one meter wide, with a depth of 20 centimeters. After receiving the report, police sealed off the affected area. Taipei’s Public Works Department quickly sent personnel to make repairs. They noted that the sinkhole was expanding, and immediate action was needed to prevent further damage.
In Kaohsiung, heavy rains also caused disruptions. In the Gangshan District, a fire broke out just after midnight on Zhongshan North Road. Firefighters arrived to find sparks coming from an electrical box on a utility pole. The fire was caused by rainwater affecting a high-voltage power line. The outage impacted 1,350 households. However, emergency crews restored power by 3:35 a.m.
