Former Japanese Economics Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi has arrived in Taiwan for a visit aimed at strengthening Japan-Taiwan cooperation. The visit, which runs from May 3 to May 6, will focus on regional affairs and economic collaboration between the two countries.
Nishimura leads a delegation that includes five members of Japan’s Diet. The group will meet with several key Taiwanese leaders, including President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, and former President Tsai Ing-wen. Nishimura previously served as Japan’s minister of economics, trade, and industry from August 2022 until December 2023. He has also been a legislator with the Liberal Democratic Party since 2003.
The main topics of discussion during the visit will include regional affairs and the enhancement of Taiwan-Japan economic cooperation. Both sides are keen to deepen their collaboration, especially in the face of global supply chain adjustments. Nishimura’s visit follows his efforts as minister to promote cooperation with Taiwan, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
Additionally, the Japanese delegation is scheduled to tour several key locations in Taiwan, including Hsinchu Science Park, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and the National Taiwan Museum of Comics in Taichung. These visits highlight the growing interest in Taiwan’s technological advancements and its contributions to the global economy.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the visit will help deepen Japan-Taiwan cooperation in technology and trade. Nishimura’s longstanding efforts to promote Taiwan-Japan relations, particularly in the semiconductor industry, are seen as a key focus during his current visit.
By enhancing Japan-Taiwan cooperation, both countries hope to strengthen their ties in a rapidly changing global environment. This visit is expected to have a lasting impact on the partnership between Japan and Taiwan.
