Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav visited the ancient capital of Kharkhorum. He inspected progress at the historical site and nearby development zones. His visit focused on the advancing Kharkhorum city redevelopment. During the visit, officials presented a new proposal. They plan to build an open-air museum over the ancient ruins. Moreover, this museum will have a roofed structure to protect artifacts year-round. It also ensures continued public access, even during harsh weather.
Currently, the Ministry of Culture is reviewing the design. Importantly, the proposal follows international preservation standards. If approved, work will begin in spring 2026. Additionally, four residential zones will rise around the city’s center. These neighborhoods will eventually house 500,000 people. As a result, Kharkhorum will become a major population and cultural hub.
Another important goal is restoring Kheltgii Tsagaan Lake. This lake fills seasonally from rain and floodwater. Therefore, engineers will repair an unused irrigation system built in 1965. Though inactive for years, the system remains structurally sound. Meanwhile, the Water Agency and Kharkhorum City Administration have planned the water supply. Groundwater will cover 50 percent of usage. In addition, surface water will provide 25 percent. Recycled greywater will make up the rest.
At the same time, work continues at the Great Khaans’ Garden. Workers have already planted 700,000 trees in eight locations. Furthermore, they have dug 45 wells to support healthy tree growth. By autumn, teams aim to plant the final 300,000 trees. This effort will help the city reach its target of one million trees. Consequently, the garden will improve air quality and add natural beauty.
Thanks to these efforts, the Kharkhorum city redevelopment balances heritage with innovation. It strengthens infrastructure, ecology, and culture at the same time.In the long run, government leaders believe Kharkhorum can serve as a national model. They see the ancient city evolving into a green, sustainable urban center. Ultimately, the Kharkhorum city redevelopment reflects a bold vision for Mongolia’s future.
