Korea’s defense industry surge was on full display this week at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX). This event signals the nation’s rising global defense presence. The biennial event drew 600 companies from 35 countries to KINTEX in Goyang, demonstrating Korea’s expanding arms exports.
In addition, visitors witnessed fighter jet displays and an air show by the Black Eagles aerobatic team. Moreover, the public portion at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam ran from Friday to Sunday, highlighting Korea’s dual approach of industry promotion and public engagement.
A major highlight was a demonstration flight aboard a CN-235 transport aircraft. This flight offered insight into Korea’s operational capabilities. Jointly developed by Spain and Indonesia, the CN-235 can transport troops and equipment, perform airdrops, and provide illumination support for night reconnaissance missions. For example, in 1998, a CN-235 aided the pursuit of a North Korean semi-submersible near Yeosu.
The flight lasted 35 minutes over southern Seoul, Guri, and Yangpyeong. Passengers noticed the cabin’s utilitarian design, with seats facing inward and minimal comforts. However, they appreciated the extra space and operational realism. The propeller vibrations and fuel scent reinforced the authenticity of military aviation.
Furthermore, Maj. Yoon Jung-han, the flight pilot, emphasized that mission safety remains paramount. “Completing the mission is important, but so is safety,” Yoon said. He added that continuous training ensures accurate decisions and effective emergency handling.
He also shared a personal anecdote from a winter airdrop in Jeju. During the mission, the snow-covered Mount Halla and Baengnokdam crater lake offered a rare and inspiring perspective.
Yoon highlighted two guiding principles for missions: achieve objectives safely and ask questions when uncertain. These principles illustrate the discipline underpinning Korea’s defense industry surge.
Overall, this year’s ADEX demonstrates Korea’s commitment to expanding defense capabilities while asserting itself in the global arms market. With increasing exports and technological development, the defense industry surge positions Korea as a key player in aerospace and defense innovation.
