Korea-Mongolia Partnership Strengthens Through Historic Visit

Date:

Woo Won-shik, National Assembly Speaker of South Korea, is making an official visit to Mongolia. He arrived at the invitation of Amarbayasgalan Dashzegve, Chairman of Mongolia’s State Great Khural.

On April 29, Woo visited the Dr. Lee Tae-joon Memorial Park in Ulaanbaatar. He laid a wreath and paid his respects at the monument. This moment marked a symbolic gesture toward the Korea-Mongolia strategic partnership.

Dr. Lee Tae-joon, a physician from Korea, ran a hospital in Niislel Khuree in 1914. He became widely respected for treating local communities during the Bogd Khanate period. The Eighth Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutagt honored him with the First-Class Order of the Vajra and granted him the rank of State Official.

To commemorate Dr. Lee’s contribution, both governments established the memorial park in 2001. Later, a museum opened in 2009 with help from Korea’s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. During the visit, the Korean delegation toured the park, viewed a documentary about Dr. Lee, and examined the construction of the Hall of Honor.

Woo and the delegation also visited the Choijin Lama Temple Museum. The museum director welcomed them and introduced the site’s significant exhibits. The temple museum, founded 110 years ago, features over 6,000 artifacts. Of those, 77 are recognized as Mongolia’s unique and priceless treasures.

This official trip marks the first visit by a South Korean National Assembly leader to Mongolia in 12 years. It plays a key role in reinforcing the Korea-Mongolia strategic partnership. The visit highlights shared respect for history and culture.

Additionally, the event supports deeper cooperation between the two parliaments. Frequent high-level meetings like this help solidify long-term collaboration. Both countries aim to maintain steady dialogue and expand bilateral relations under the Korea-Mongolia strategic partnership.
