Korea UNSC Leadership Puts AI at Center of Global Security Debate

Date:

Korea’s UNSC leadership began with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and international security. President Lee Jae Myung will preside over a high-level debate on AI later this month. The event highlights Seoul’s determination to address new global challenges.

Kim Sang-jin, Korea’s charge d’affaires to the UN, presented the program of work. He explained that Korea will lead the council with efficiency, transparency, and inclusiveness. He also stressed that peace, development, and human rights guide Korea’s diplomacy. These values will shape the council’s work under Korean leadership.

The Korea UNSC agenda includes multiple important sessions. However, the most significant will be the open debate on AI under the framework of peace and security. President Lee will chair the debate, the first time a Korean president has led a UNSC session. Diplomats see this as a milestone in both foreign policy and technology.

Additionally, President Lee will deliver a keynote speech at the UN General Assembly. His remarks will focus on emerging global issues and Korea’s role in solving them. Officials believe that rapid AI development requires urgent discussion. The presidency aims to highlight opportunities while limiting risks.

Kim Sang-jin emphasized that the council has already held two briefings on AI. However, he argued that this month’s high-level debate is necessary. The Korean delegation hopes to bring together diverse voices for constructive dialogue. They want to ensure that AI strengthens global peace rather than undermines it.

Meanwhile, North Korea remains outside the official UNSC schedule this month. Still, Kim confirmed that the council stands ready to respond to provocations, such as missile launches. This reflects the council’s ongoing vigilance in the region.

Kim also commented on Kim Jong-un’s visit to Beijing. The North Korean leader will appear alongside Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin during a military parade. Korea continues to watch these developments closely. Officials urged that regional summits should promote peace and denuclearization.

In conclusion, Korea’s UNSC leadership represents both responsibility and opportunity. By centering AI in the council’s agenda, Korea positions itself as a constructive global voice. The presidency’s success could shape future debates on technology and security worldwide.
