LG unveils next phase of ESS battery innovation in Europe

LG Energy Solution has revealed its latest strategy to lead ESS battery innovation during InterBattery Europe 2025 in Munich. The company introduced a new 20-foot container-style energy storage system, built using European-made lithium iron phosphate cells. Moreover, it emphasized that the product’s stackable structure improves space efficiency while raising safety and energy density. According to LG, the new JF2S cell offers 2.7 times the capacity of its previous model. Therefore, the product launch underscores LG’s growing ambition in the competitive European energy storage market.

At the same event, LG presented a second ESS product named JF1R, aimed at residential use in European homes. Notably, the company explained that one person can install it in only ten minutes, showing its user-friendly design. In addition, LG guarantees the JF1R’s quality for 15 years, hoping to attract households seeking durable and compact solutions. With demand for home energy systems rising across the continent, LG sees a strong opportunity for growth. Consequently, this residential product strengthens LG’s broader ESS battery innovation strategy.

Meanwhile, LG will begin producing ESS batteries in Poland later this year, after completing new production lines in Wroclaw. This move will help the firm secure a stable local supply for European customers, improving logistics and cost efficiency. Furthermore, it also allows LG to react quickly to market demands and regional regulations. The company believes that local manufacturing boosts trust and reduces dependency on long-distance supply chains. Thus, through this investment, LG reinforces its long-term focus on ESS battery innovation.

Furthermore, LG will unveil a trial version of its battery passport system, designed to support EU sustainability standards. Specifically, the digital passport records each battery’s function, chemical composition, and carbon footprint over its full life cycle. LG hopes the system will strengthen its environmental, social, and governance competitiveness in global markets. By combining transparency with technology, LG seeks to differentiate its products from other global battery suppliers. As a result, this battery passport forms a central piece in LG’s updated ESS battery innovation roadmap.

Kim Hyung-sik, head of LG’s ESS division, said the company plans to offer total solutions across software and hardware. Importantly, he stressed that European customers expect top-tier quality and regulatory compliance from ESS providers. Kim also noted that LG’s focus on local production supports fast adaptation to shifting policy environments. Additionally, he argued that proactive measures like the passport reflect LG’s commitment to responsible innovation. Through these combined efforts, LG intends to expand its leadership in ESS battery innovation throughout Europe.
