Macao Vote for Eighth Legislative Assembly Underway

Date:

Macao began voting for the eighth Legislative Assembly on Sunday morning. First, citizens started casting ballots at 9:00 a.m. local time. According to election officials, they will keep polls open until 9:00 p.m. Meanwhile, preliminary results are expected early Monday, giving residents an early look at the outcome.

In this election, voters will fill 33 seats in the new legislature. Specifically, the public will elect 14 members directly, while designated groups will select 12 members through indirect voting. Finally, the chief executive will appoint the remaining seven within 15 days of confirming the results.

Officials set up 38 direct polling stations and five indirect stations across 37 locations in the city. They also urged residents to vote and participate in shaping the region’s future.

The Legislative Assembly serves as Macao’s main lawmaking body. Members must be permanent residents, and each term lasts four years, except that the first term followed special rules.

Earlier this year, Macao revised its Legislative Assembly Election Law. Officials strengthened candidate qualification reviews and improved oversight. They explained that the updates uphold the principle of “patriots administering Macao” and streamline every stage of the voting process.

Authorities said the 2024 vote will be fair and transparent. Furthermore, they pledged to maintain justice, order, and a clean electoral environment while protecting voter rights under the updated legal framework.

Political observers call this vote crucial for Macao’s future governance. They added that the results will guide local legislation and policy for the next four years. Additionally, analysts expect steady voter turnout throughout the day.

As residents cast their votes, they can choose representatives who reflect their priorities. Election workers will count ballots immediately after polls close. Afterwards, officials will confirm the final results before the chief executive appoints the remaining members.
