Taiwan’s 66th Marine Brigade recently carried out combat drills in southern Taiwan. These exercises focused heavily on rapid response skills. Specifically, the 2nd Battalion trained at the Joint Operations Training Base in Pingtung.
To start, the marines deployed grenade launcher vehicles for immediate suppressive fire. Meanwhile, Humvees with M2 machine guns provided fast-moving support. Additionally, troops used 120mm and 81mm mortars to attack from longer range.
Furthermore, instructors introduced surprise scenarios to test flexibility. As a result, every unit had to adapt quickly. Coordination became essential, especially under pressure.
In each drill, soldiers returned fire while taking cover behind terrain and vehicles. Although the situations were simulated, the intensity felt real. Consequently, troops moved with speed and purpose.
Captain Huang, who leads the 4th Company, described the importance of timing. He stated, “Each fire mission has strict time limits. Therefore, soldiers must act fast and stay sharp.”
Moreover, troops practiced volley fire and group assaults. These activities required tight cooperation and rapid decision-making. Notably, the drills forced soldiers to rely on teamwork.
Over time, the brigade has modernized its structure. It phased out its tank and heavy artillery battalions. Instead, it created a drone battalion and a firepower battalion. This change allows faster responses to threats.
Because of rising regional tensions, Taiwan continues to update its defense strategy. Thus, the military prioritizes speed, accuracy, and high mobility.
Even under stress, the marines showed strong performance. They demonstrated improved judgment and increased combat awareness. Besides, their rapid response skills stood out during every scenario.
Although these were training drills, the marines treated each task as real. Therefore, every move carried serious weight.
Looking ahead, the 66th Brigade will expand this style of training. After all, adapting quickly remains crucial in today’s warfare.
