Mongolia’s COP17 preparations are advancing steadily with exactly 43 days remaining until the global desertification conference opens. The organizing working group held its 19th regular meeting, COPTIME19, in Ulaanbaatar on July 4. Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change Munkhtamir Batbayar chaired the session. Furthermore, the meeting reviewed task implementation progress and addressed both resolved issues and ongoing organizational challenges.
Overall COP17 preparations currently stand at 68 percent completion across all workstreams. Additionally, organizers have completed 87.5 percent of the 201 tasks assigned during the previous 18 COPTIME meetings. Consequently, the remaining 12.5 percent of outstanding tasks will require focused attention over the coming weeks. The figures reflect significant organizational momentum as Mongolia approaches this landmark hosting milestone.
Venue construction timelines follow strict UN procedural requirements that organizers must meet precisely. Under standard conference protocol, the venue and Blue Zone facilities transfer to UN control 14 days before the event begins. Furthermore, the UN retains jurisdiction over those facilities for six days after the conference concludes. Therefore, Mongolia must complete all Blue Zone and Green Zone construction and exterior landscaping within exactly one month from today.
Hosting COP17 carries enormous significance for Mongolia given the country’s acute vulnerability to desertification. Approximately 77 percent of Mongolia’s territory currently suffers from desertification and land degradation. Furthermore, around 23 percent of affected land has permanently lost its natural regeneration capacity. Consequently, Mongolia brings both urgency and direct lived experience to its role as the global conference host nation.
The COPTIME meeting structure has provided consistent organizational oversight throughout the lengthy preparation process. Each session systematically tracks sub-committee progress and resolves emerging logistical and administrative challenges. Going forward, organizers will intensify efforts to complete remaining tasks before the UN facility handover deadline. Successfully delivering COP17 on schedule would significantly elevate Mongolia’s international profile as a committed actor in global environmental governance and climate resilience efforts.
