Mongolia Expands Fiber Network and Data Infrastructure in Gobi Region

Date:

The Government of Mongolia recently announced plans to expand the fiber network and data infrastructure in the Gobi region. This initiative aims to transform the area into a center for specialized industries and green energy. Specifically, the project will involve constructing a new data center in Umnugobi aimag, alongside the introduction of fiber optic connectivity to 13 key locations across the region.

To develop the Gobi region into a hub for industry and green energy, Mongolia must improve its energy, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure. Fortunately, the country has several natural advantages. These include abundant energy resources, a favorable climate, and a strategic location. Additionally, the low risk of natural disasters makes Mongolia an attractive location for data infrastructure development.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Communications has emphasized the importance of leveraging these advantages. In doing so, it hopes to boost the growing digital economy and promote the international data center market. Consequently, the Ministry has outlined key priorities for this project. These include updating the legal framework, creating a stable investment environment for foreign data centers, and ensuring robust cybersecurity standards.

Moreover, the government plans to prioritize renewable energy infrastructure. This will involve offering green financing mechanisms, streamlining land allocation processes, and providing tax incentives and energy benefits. Such measures aim to attract more investment and foster sustainable growth.

Looking ahead, Mongolia is preparing to approve a national strategy for data center development. The strategy will cover the period from 2025 to 2030. Notably, public-private partnerships will play a significant role in realizing this vision. These collaborations will also help in the development of regional cable infrastructure, which is essential for data center operations.

In addition, the global demand for data centers is rising. Industry experts predict a 10-12 percent annual growth rate by 2030. As international companies increasingly seek regions with low-cost, stable energy sources, Mongolia is positioning itself as a competitive destination for data infrastructure investment.
