Mongolia World Bank Cooperation Strengthens

Chairpersons of the Standing Committees on Social Policy and Education, Culture, Science, and Sports of Mongolia’s State Great Khural, Enkhnasan Lutaa and Undram Chinbat, met with World Bank representatives. The meeting was led by Alberto Rodriguez, the World Bank’s Regional Director for Human Development in the East Asia and Pacific region. The discussion focused on strengthening Mongolia World Bank cooperation to support social sector projects.

Chairperson Lutaa started by outlining the structure and responsibilities of the Parliament and its standing committees. She expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership between Mongolia and the World Bank, particularly in health. She also emphasized the need to extend emergency medical services, especially in rural areas, to improve response capabilities.

Chairperson Chinbat shared her committee’s efforts to advance the Education Law package. She also discussed plans to declare a specific year as the “Year to Support Education.” Chairperson Chinbat highlighted plans to build new schools in rural areas. These efforts will be in collaboration with UNICEF as part of a pilot project. Additionally, she mentioned ongoing improvements to school infrastructure, including the installation of modern restrooms in soum-level schools.

Zulpkhar Sarkhad, a member of the State Great Khural, also addressed the meeting. He emphasized the importance of reforming Mongolia’s social insurance system. He noted the need to improve core indicators in social insurance services. Mr. Sarkhad also proposed expanding the World Bank’s performance-based financing model to the education sector.

Alberto Rodriguez emphasized the importance of investing in people to achieve rapid development. He reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Mongolia World Bank cooperation. The World Bank will help mobilize international financial resources for the social sectors. He also highlighted the Bank’s willingness to ensure all children, regardless of location, have access to quality education.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing development goals. Both sides aim to strengthen Mongolia World Bank cooperation in education, health, and other social sectors.
