Musk Backs Samsung’s AI Chip Breakthrough in $16.5B Tesla Supply Deal

Date:

Elon Musk has endorsed Samsung’s AI chip agreement with Tesla, confirming a growing partnership between the two global tech leaders. This $16.5 billion supply deal will support Tesla’s next-generation self-driving technology through Samsung’s advanced semiconductor capabilities.

During a recent video call with Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong and top executives, Musk discussed what a strong long-term collaboration should look like. He stressed the need for combining the strengths of both companies to ensure successful outcomes. This direct involvement reinforces the importance of the Samsung AI chip deal for Tesla’s future.

According to Musk, the reported value of the agreement is only the minimum. He hinted that the full value of the Samsung AI chip deal could increase as development advances. The deal centers on supplying Tesla’s AI6 chips, designed to power its Full Self-Driving systems.

Following the announcement, Samsung shares surged for three days in a row. On the day of the news, the company’s stock rose above 70,000 won for the first time in months. It continued to climb and reached 72,900 won by midday Wednesday, up over 3 percent.

Some online users raised doubts about Samsung’s ability to deliver next-gen 2-nanometer chips compared to competitors like TSMC. Musk responded by praising both companies. He said working with either Samsung or TSMC is an honor, showing equal confidence in both.

Meanwhile, Samsung Chairman Lee visited Washington for business meetings. His trip comes just before a U.S. tariff decision deadline. While the purpose remains undisclosed, many speculate he is involved in trade discussions and strategic business talks with global partners.

Analysts believe the timing of Lee’s trip and the Samsung AI chip deal reflects Samsung’s push to strengthen global ties. This includes both commercial and political efforts to expand influence and secure long-term partnerships. With Musk’s endorsement, Samsung strengthens its position in the AI semiconductor sector. The Samsung AI chip deal highlights the company’s ambition to lead in both chip manufacturing and autonomous vehicle technologies.
