Nara Deer Antler-Cutting Ceremony Delayed After Tourist Injuries

Date:

The Nara deer ceremony took place on Saturday, about a month later than usual, following rising tourist injuries. Authorities delayed the event to reduce the risk of harm from male deer, which become aggressive during the rutting season.

The tradition dates back to the Edo period and was originally designed to protect both humans and the deer population in Nara Park. Today, Rokuen, a wildlife care facility, organizes the Nara deer ceremony and oversees the annual antler-trimming process.

Officials pushed this year’s ceremony to early November because 35 visitors were injured last September, seven times the number recorded the previous year. This delay allowed staff to focus on safety while maintaining the traditional ritual.

During the ceremony, deer were released into Rokuen’s antler-cutting corral. Twenty catchers herded the animals into a specific area using ropes. A person dressed as a Shinto priest then trimmed the deer antlers and presented them to the audience.

Spectators, including children, were amazed by the speed and skill of the catchers. A six-year-old from Osaka said, “This was incredible to see. The catchers looked very skilled and fast.” Organizers had also scheduled a second day on Sunday, but they canceled it due to expected heavy rain.

Authorities emphasized that delaying the Nara deer ceremony helps balance visitor safety with the preservation of a centuries-old tradition. They also noted that ongoing antler management is essential to prevent injuries while protecting wildlife.

Overall, the Nara deer ceremony demonstrates how historical practices adapt to modern challenges. Officials plan to continue educating visitors on safe wildlife interactions during peak tourism periods, ensuring both tradition and public safety are preserved.
