China’s animated blockbuster, Ne Zha 2, has made an impressive global debut, earning 15.5 billion yuan (around 2.16 billion U.S. dollars) as of Thursday, according to Maoyan, a popular ticketing platform. The film’s release on January 29 during the Chinese New Year has propelled it into the global spotlight.
As of now, Ne Zha 2 ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film worldwide. It stands just behind James Cameron’s 1997 classic, Titanic, which grossed nearly 2.27 billion dollars. The film has broken multiple significant records along the way. For one, it became the first movie ever to cross the 1 billion U.S. dollar mark in a single market. Additionally, it made history by becoming the first non-Hollywood film to reach the billion-dollar club. Ne Zha 2 also holds the title of the highest-grossing animated movie of all time worldwide.
The film is directed by Yang Yu, also known as Jiaozi, and continues the story of the beloved Chinese mythological character, Nezha. In Ne Zha 2, the rebellious boy god and his companion Aobing must rebuild their physical forms. Alongside the immortal Taiyi Zhenren, they embark on a journey filled with self-discovery, destiny, and defiance.
This incredible box office performance highlights the growing global appeal of Chinese animated films. Ne Zha 2 shows that animated movies, especially those rooted in rich cultural stories, can achieve worldwide success. With its unique mix of mythology and stunning animation, it has captivated audiences both in China and abroad.
Looking forward, Ne Zha 2 could continue to challenge other global box office giants, as it cements its place in cinematic history.
