Recent shipments include mink coats, silk-wool blend suits, and fashionable women’s skirts. Traders also imported sweaters, cardigans, wool and cashmere knitwear, down jackets, and lightweight puffer coats. Premium mink coats costing about $690 are reportedly popular.
North Korean traders have also ordered pleated, pencil, and flared skirts. Men’s suits made from silk and wool blends are in high demand. Classic dress shirts in white or light blue accompany these shipments. Footwear, including dress shoes and winter work boots, and accessories such as gloves, scarves, and stockings are also imported in large quantities.
Traders route shipments through Hunchun in Jilin province to Rason before distribution to Pyongyang and other major cities. This route costs more but avoids strict inspections at Dandong, where customs tightly regulate goods bound for North Korea. Traders are willing to pay extra to ensure luxury items reach domestic markets.
The use of fashion magazine terminology when ordering and negotiating shows traders’ growing sophistication. They monitor foreign publications and online stores to follow global trends, sometimes confusing Chinese brokers.
Seasonal factors affect imports. Winter apparel dominates current shipments, but analysts expect spring clothing and electronics, including laptops and desktops, to rise before the new semester.
The increase in luxury clothing imports shows the resilience of some North Korean consumers and the creativity of traders navigating restrictive trade rules. Observers predict the trend will continue as long as demand remains strong and inspections remain inconsistent.
