Artillery Threat Grows as North Korea Unveils 60km Range System

Date:

North Korea has unveiled a new weapon system that raises the artillery threat against the Seoul metropolitan area. The Rodong Sinmun reported on Friday that leader Kim Jong-un inspected a major munitions factory on Wednesday. He reviewed the production of a new 155-millimeter self-propelled artillery system. Consequently, this artillery threat now extends to targets more than 60 kilometers away. Kim stated that frontline units will deploy the system within this year. Three battalions of long-range artillery units on the southern border will receive the weapon.

The new artillery threat could potentially put Seoul within range from positions north of the Military Demarcation Line. Seoul lies approximately 40 to 50 kilometers from the inter-Korean border. Therefore, most of the capital region now faces direct danger from this system. Kim described the weapon as a new-generation artillery system with high mobility and firepower. He said the range of large-caliber rifled guns for frontline units now exceeds 60 kilometers. The system first appeared at a military parade in October last year. North Korea aims to narrow the capability gap with South Korea’s K9 howitzer.

South Korea’s K9 howitzer uses the same 155mm caliber but has a range slightly over 40 kilometers. North Korea’s older 152mm self-propelled artillery has a range of about 20 kilometers. However, its existing 170mm long-range artillery can reach roughly 60 kilometers. Nevertheless, this new artillery threat combines range with precision and mobility improvements. Kim called for redefining operational concepts to match the new weapons. The planned deployment follows Pyongyang’s hostile two states policy toward South Korea. North Korea recently amended its constitution to treat the Military Demarcation Line as a border.

This artillery threat codifies the shift away from inter-Korean reunification. During the factory inspection, Kim said the rapid expansion of strike range would bring major changes. Improved target destruction capability will give advantages to ground operations, he added. Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies, offered analysis. He said North Korea appears to demonstrate precision strike capability against key facilities in Seoul. If deployed to front-line areas, most of the Seoul metropolitan region falls under direct artillery threat, Lim warned.

However, some experts caution against overestimating this artillery threat. North Korea’s claims remain unverified at this time. Actual operational capabilities including accuracy and sustained firing performance need further testing. A Joint Chiefs of Staff official said South Korea’s military is closely monitoring developments related to North Korean weapons systems. Looking ahead, this artillery threat will likely influence regional security dynamics. South Korea may accelerate its own missile defense and counter-battery systems. The international community continues to watch Pyongyang’s weapons modernization closely. For now, Seoul residents face an expanded range of potential artillery danger.
