North Korea has begun trials of its new Choe Hyon-class destroyer, aiming to boost naval strength quickly. State media reported the tests happened on Monday and Tuesday, following the ship’s launch on Friday. The North conducted the tests to assess both weapon systems and combat capabilities. The Choe Hyon-class destroyer represents a major leap in Pyongyang’s naval ambitions. Experts believe this move signals new military coordination with Russia.
During the first day, North Korea launched multiple weapons from the destroyer, including supersonic and strategic cruise missiles. The ship also fired a 127 mm naval gun and surface-to-air missiles. On the second day, tactical antiship guided weapons and smoke-based countermeasures were tested. North Korean engineers also evaluated automatic cannons and electronic jamming systems. The Choe Hyon-class destroyer completed each task without reporting any technical issues.
Kim Jong-un supervised the first day of testing and emphasized faster development of naval nuclear forces. He called for bold action to boost maritime defenses and adopt an aggressive military stance. His daughter Ju-ae and several senior officials, including Jang Chang-ha and Kim Jong-sik, joined the observation. Kim stated that future defense plans must include strong sea-based missile platforms. He believes the Choe Hyon-class destroyer could help guarantee nuclear second-strike capability.
South Korean experts say the vessel’s missile systems and radar resemble Russian-made military hardware. They believe the destroyer includes components like phased-array radar and integrated air defenses. Lawmaker Yoo Yong-won said the radar looks similar to Russia’s Pantsir air defense system. He suspects North Korea received help from Moscow in exchange for military support in Ukraine. The Choe Hyon-class destroyer could symbolize growing ties between Pyongyang and Moscow.
Meanwhile, South Korea shared new satellite images of land-clearing near the Tumen River. This work likely prepares for a vehicle bridge linking North Korea and Russia. A summit between Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin in June 2024 led to the bridge plan. The road bridge will stand 415 meters downstream from the current rail connection. Authorities expect the project to finish before 2027.
