North Korea tests missiles simulating nuclear strikes in its latest show of force against U.S.–South Korea military drills. According to state media, Kim Jong Un oversaw the launches on Thursday morning from the east coast. The exercise involved the 600mm multiple-launch rocket system and the Hwasong-11A short-range ballistic missile. These weapons targeted simulated enemy positions as part of a larger nuclear readiness drill. Therefore, North Korea tests missiles again to signal growing defiance amid rising regional pressure.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the test helped familiarize units with the national nuclear weapons management system. Furthermore, the drill included training on the nuclear “trigger” mechanism first introduced in March 2023. In addition, military commanders attended a special lecture on counterattack systems before the launch. Officials described the exercises as vital preparation against “enemy” escalation around sensitive border regions. The launches took place between 8:10 a.m. and 9:42 a.m., based on assessments from South Korean and Japanese defense agencies. Specifically, at least two 600mm launchers fired rockets simultaneously from a beach near Wonsan, according to released images. Later, a Hwasong-11A missile traveled approximately 800 kilometers before splashing into the sea. Moreover, Japanese authorities reported an irregular trajectory, raising concerns about evasive flight patterns. This marked the first confirmed Hwasong-11A test in over two years, adding significance to the launch.
