North Korean Troops in Ukraine Face Heavy Losses

Date:

South Korea’s intelligence agency reported major losses among North Korean troops in Ukraine this week. According to Rep. Lee Seong-kweun, at least 600 North Korean soldiers have died. Over 4,100 others sustained injuries while supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine. These figures come from the National Intelligence Service, which briefed lawmakers in a closed-door session. North Korea has deployed around 15,000 troops to the conflict so far.

Lee stated that nearly half of the wounded returned to North Korea between January and March by train or plane. He also noted that North Korean troops in Ukraine who died were cremated before being transported home. Although no recent reinforcements have been detected, the NIS continues to monitor the situation closely. Lee believes Pyongyang’s formal recognition of its involvement stems from efforts to strengthen ties with Moscow. Putin, he added, likely welcomed North Korea’s participation to show momentum on the battlefield.

Lee said Kim Jong-un does not plan to attend Russia’s upcoming Victory Day celebration in person. Instead, Choe Ryong-hae will represent North Korea at the event. Meanwhile, Kim Yo-jong reaffirmed North Korea’s nuclear stance, showing no signs of retreat. The NIS believes Pyongyang will maintain its nuclear posture in the coming months. The Yongbyon facility remains active, producing plutonium that could support another nuclear test.

North Korean troops in Ukraine represent only one part of the growing Russia–North Korea alliance. Rep. Kim Byung-kee said Russia compensated North Korea with weapons, cash, and military assistance. North Korea has supplied missiles and artillery shells worth billions of dollars to Moscow. Now, Pyongyang seeks Russian help in revamping its tourism and energy sectors. Talks also include cooperation on drones, satellites, and air defense systems.

Lee also mentioned signs pointing to Kim Ju-ae’s rise as North Korea’s next leader. She recently reappeared in public, accompanying Kim Jong-un at key events. This marks a shift in North Korea’s leadership visibility strategy. While her succession remains unofficial, analysts believe the regime continues grooming her for future rule. With international attention growing, the fate of North Korean troops in Ukraine could influence broader regional dynamics.
