Push for Taiwan-US Tax Deal Gains Momentum

Date:

US Representative Judy Chu renewed her call for a finalized Taiwan-US tax deal on Saturday. She spoke at the Taiwanese American Heritage Week Fair in Monterey Park. During her speech, she highlighted the need for urgency.

Taiwan, she noted, is a top 10 trading partner of the United States. However, it is still the only one without a tax agreement. Because of this, businesses face double taxation that discourages growth.

Moreover, Chu pointed out that the bill has already passed in the House of Representatives. Now, she hopes the Senate will act quickly. In her view, this is a matter of both economic policy and justice.

Importantly, she emphasized Taiwan’s democratic values. She said those values strengthen its global economic role. In addition, she called Taiwan a key ally in the Indo-Pacific region.

Therefore, she argued, a Taiwan-US tax deal is long overdue. The agreement would remove tax barriers for companies and individuals on both sides. As a result, it would support increased trade and investment.

Furthermore, Chu said that many U.S. allies already benefit from similar tax agreements. Taiwan should not be left out. Without this deal, businesses face extra costs that make competition harder.

James Chi, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, echoed Chu’s remarks. He said Taiwan’s profile in the United States continues to grow. Additionally, he praised the role of the Taiwanese American community in that progress.

Chi noted that cultural events like the fair help build visibility. Besides sharing food and music, they promote connection. For that reason, he hopes to see more such celebrations across the country.

This year’s event brought vibrant performances and traditional cuisine to Greater Los Angeles. It also marked over 20 years of honoring Taiwanese heritage. Throughout the day, crowds enjoyed dancing, music, and community bonding.

Above all, Chu and Chi agreed on one message. A Taiwan-US tax deal is crucial for fairness, trade, and diplomatic strength. With growing support, they believe the agreement can finally become reality.
