Regional Development Prioritized in North Korea as Officials Push New Projects

Date:

North Korea has made regional development its top priority, with Premier Pak Thae-song urging officials to fully commit. Pak delivered the remarks during a groundbreaking ceremony in Pyongwon County, South Phyongan Province, stressing the importance of executing the policy effectively.

Pak described the “Regional Development 20X10 Policy” as the highest priority for the party and state. He called on officials to show patriotic strength and make this year “a new year of victory for the regional revolution.” Analysts say this reflects Pyongyang’s effort to demonstrate achievements ahead of a key party congress expected this month.

Since 2024, North Korea has pushed the development initiative to build modern industrial plants in 20 cities and counties annually. The plan aims to narrow economic gaps over the next decade. Kim Jong-un recently visited multiple construction sites to monitor progress and encourage public support.

Last week, Kim attended a groundbreaking event in South Hwanghae Province, reinforcing the government’s commitment to regional development. Experts note that these visits signal political messaging and an effort to show tangible domestic progress. They also aim to boost morale among officials and citizens.

Officials leading regional development projects are responsible for meeting technical and economic goals while following the party’s objectives. Analysts say successful implementation could increase industrial capacity, create jobs, and support economic stability. Furthermore, the policy reinforces self-reliance and modernization, key for internal legitimacy.

Looking ahead, North Korea will likely continue emphasizing regional development through more construction projects across provinces. Authorities plan to oversee progress closely while motivating workers. If sustained, these initiatives could gradually transform local economies and demonstrate visible results to the population.
