A recent incident near the Korean Peninsula has highlighted the dangers of the U.S.-led joint military exercises conducted with South Korea. This accident, involving two South Korean fighter jets, sheds light on why these exercises are perilous and why they deserve global condemnation.
The incident occurred just before the start of the large-scale U.S.-ROK joint exercises, dubbed Freedom Shield 2025. The two South Korean fighters mistakenly bombed a civilian village during a live shell-firing drill. This bombing, which was a result of errors in inputting coordinates, caused significant damage and casualties, including the destruction of homes and vehicles.
This event is not an isolated case. Accidental bombings during U.S.-ROK military drills are unfortunately common. However, the timing of this incident is especially concerning. It occurred close to the southern border of North Korea, right before the U.S. and South Korea’s joint exercises simulating war with the DPRK.
If the bombs had fallen just a little farther, they would have crossed the border into North Korea. This could have sparked a much more dangerous escalation. The DPRK, which remains highly alert, considers these exercises to be a direct threat to its security. The presence of nuclear forces in the region only amplifies the risks.
The incident illustrates that these war rehearsals, which are often framed as efforts to ensure peace and stability, could instead lead to a catastrophic situation. Despite efforts to reduce live-fire exercises in Freedom Shield 2025, the risks of these military drills cannot be ignored. The U.S. and South Korea must recognize the danger posed by these exercises.
If the U.S. and South Korea continue their war games on the Korean Peninsula, they will perpetuate a threat to peace and stability. The DPRK remains vigilant and will respond to any threats as it deems necessary. Therefore, the international community must urgently reconsider the escalation of tensions caused by these drills.
