Seoul has expanded its cultural tourism efforts by introducing a new series of historic walking tours across the city’s central district. The initiative aims to connect residents and visitors with the capital’s heritage while offering a slower alternative to the fast pace of modern urban life.
The Jung District office launched an expanded program featuring 11 specially designed walking routes throughout Seoul’s historic core. The project transforms important neighborhoods into outdoor cultural spaces where participants can explore landmarks, stories, and traditions. Furthermore, organizers hope the tours will strengthen public interest in Seoul’s historical identity.
The new program follows the success of an earlier pilot project that attracted more than 9,400 participants last year. Additionally, the previous tours received a satisfaction rating of nearly 97 percent from visitors. These results encouraged officials to develop more diverse routes and improve the overall experience.
One of the major additions this year focuses on Admiral Yi Sun-sin, a celebrated Korean naval commander from the 16th century. The “Yi Sun-sin Road” route covers 1.3 kilometers and guides visitors through locations connected to his early life. The journey begins near Euljiro 3-ga Station and continues through several historic areas.
During the route, participants visit a memorial marking Yi Sun-sin’s birthplace and explore traditional markets. The trail eventually reaches the former Hadogam military site, connecting historical education with modern city exploration. As a result, the route offers visitors a closer understanding of Korea’s military and cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, another popular route combines architecture, food, and neighborhood history. The Gwanghui and Jangchung area tour introduces visitors to historic gates, distinctive buildings, and famous local dining areas. Therefore, participants experience both Seoul’s past and its continuing urban culture.
The program also highlights hidden attractions along the walking paths. Guides introduce visitors to unique cafes, long-established restaurants, and lesser-known cultural locations. These stops help create a more complete picture of Seoul’s neighborhoods beyond major tourist destinations.
Moreover, city planners have expanded evening walking programs because Seoul offers a different atmosphere after sunset. The Jeongdong Night Stroll and Gwanghuimun Moonlight Road routes will operate several times weekly through October. These nighttime tours allow visitors to enjoy illuminated historic areas while avoiding summer heat.
During the hottest months of July and August, daytime walking programs will temporarily pause. Instead, organizers will focus on evening routes that provide safer and more comfortable conditions. This adjustment reflects efforts to balance tourism growth with visitor wellbeing.
Officials believe the walking tours support local businesses by bringing more visitors into traditional neighborhoods. Restaurants, markets, and small shops along the routes may benefit from increased activity. Additionally, the program supports Seoul’s broader goal of promoting sustainable tourism.
The expansion also reflects changing travel preferences, as many visitors increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences. Rather than only visiting famous attractions, tourists often want deeper connections with local history and communities. Consequently, walking-based tourism continues gaining popularity worldwide.
