Shanghai achieved a record-breaking tourism revenue of approximately 576.1 billion yuan (about 80.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024, local authorities announced on Friday.
Domestic tourism contributed around 497.3 billion yuan, while revenue from inbound tourism reached nearly 11.1 billion U.S. dollars—both marking historic highs for the city, according to the Shanghai Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau.
In total, Shanghai attracted about 390 million domestic tourists and over 6.7 million international visitors last year.
The metropolis has recently unveiled a three-year strategic plan to enhance its tourism industry, with the goal of establishing itself as a world-renowned destination. Upcoming projects include the highly anticipated opening of LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort this summer, following the success of Shanghai Disney Resort. Additionally, Warner Bros. plans to open a “Making of Harry Potter” studio tour in the city in 2027.
Shanghai is also actively expanding its cruise tourism industry by developing diversified travel offerings, positioning itself as China’s leading destination for international cruise visitors.
