Sichuan’s low-altitude economy is soaring forward as the province launches air routes and unveils cutting-edge aviation technology. At a major launch event in Chengdu, officials rolled out eight new routes for cargo and passengers. Consequently, the move aims to position Sichuan as a western China hub for this emerging economic sector. These routes connect cities within Sichuan and extend to nearby Chongqing. Flight durations range between 30 and 90 minutes.
Specifically, Liu Chuanjian, chief flight instructor at Civil Aviation Flight University of China, introduced four passenger and four cargo routes. Two cargo lines use general aviation aircraft to link Chengdu with Nanchong and Chongqing. In contrast, two others rely on unmanned aerial vehicles, each completing their journey in 90 minutes. Notably, the passenger routes will shorten intercity travel, saving hours compared to traditional road transport. As a result, travel times are reduced by up to three-quarters in some cases.
Moreover, Ran Hang from Huaxia Feidi Technology said fixed-wing aircraft will handle three of the passenger routes. Each aircraft carries six people, with tickets costing less than 200 yuan per trip. For example, he explained the Dazhou-Beichuan route once took five hours by road. Now, passengers can reach their destination in about 80 minutes. Additionally, more routes are in development, expanding into southern and northeastern Sichuan.
Meanwhile, the ceremony showcased various low-altitude technologies and aircraft models. Among them was the AE200 eVTOL, developed by Aerofugia under Geely Technology Group. According to CEO Guo Liang, the aircraft supports airport shuttles, intercity trips, and tourism. It features a 200-kilometer range and will undergo manned flight tests this year. If all goes well, commercial trials may begin next year after certification.
Furthermore, Guo added that Aerofugia has already received orders for hundreds of AE200 units. His company hopes to begin operations soon after receiving the green light. In addition, Sichuan Hangkun Aircraft Manufacturing presented its Eagle-700 general aviation aircraft. Chairman Zhang Jianping said it can cover all counties in Sichuan from Chengdu. Notably, the company plans mass production of 300 units annually starting next year.
To sustain momentum, the province unveiled strong policy support for Sichuan’s low-altitude economy. According to Dai Yongbo from the Development and Reform Commission, Sichuan launched a comprehensive support package. It covers infrastructure, innovation, manufacturing, and demonstration projects. In fact, a 3-billion-yuan special fund will help build an industrial ecosystem. On top of that, 300 million yuan will be distributed yearly for sector growth.
In terms of incentives, the policy offers up to 20 million yuan for top-tier aviation firms. Moreover, subsidies will cover 60 percent of demonstration project costs. These measures aim to boost investor confidence and encourage more innovation. Therefore, Dai believes targeted funding will ensure long-term growth. Ultimately, Sichuan’s low-altitude economy is being groomed to become a national leader in aerial transport and innovation.
Although still developing, Sichuan’s low-altitude economy is gaining altitude through clear planning and strong investment. Thanks to new routes, affordable travel, and unmanned cargo services, the sector is evolving rapidly. The province is now taking firm steps to lead China’s next wave of aviation development. With funding, technology, and public-private collaboration in place, its future looks promising. Clearly, Sichuan’s low-altitude economy is no longer a vision—it’s taking flight.
