SK Group Chief Chey Tae-won Bolsters AI Alliances with TSMC and Nvidia

Date:

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is rapidly expanding his network of AI alliances with the world’s leading chipmakers. On Wednesday, he met TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei in Taiwan. This meeting occurred just days after his talks with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Moreover, these AI alliances directly target the growing bottlenecks in global AI chip supply chains.

The two executives discussed next-generation high-bandwidth memory and advanced chip packaging. Both technologies remain critical to boosting the performance of AI accelerators. Consequently, SK hynix said the leaders agreed to broaden collaboration across HBM development and advanced packaging. This move aims to keep both companies ahead in the fiercely competitive AI market.

SK hynix already supplies the dominant share of high-bandwidth memory chips for AI applications. Its upcoming sixth-generation HBM4 will use TSMC’s 12-nanometer base die technology and SK hynix’s 1b DRAM process. As a result, this chip will power Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. Additionally, Chey reinforced his AI alliances during a stop at Computex in Taipei. At the SK hynix booth, Huang wrote “Please make more” on an HBM4E sample, underscoring Nvidia’s insatiable demand.

Meanwhile, the focus of these AI alliances shifts to Seoul. Huang arrives in the capital on Friday for a packed itinerary. He plans a private dinner with Chey, Hyundai Motor Group Chair Chung Euisun, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, and Naver founder Lee Hae-jin. The gathering will likely cement further collaboration across AI, robotics, and autonomous driving.

Beyond the boardroom, Huang’s visit includes high-profile public appearances. For instance, he will tape an episode of the talk show “You Quiz on the Block.” On Sunday, he will throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Doosan Bears baseball game. He will wear a jersey with the number 93, a nod to Nvidia’s founding year. Later, Huang will meet with leaders of Korean AI startups and visit Seoul National University’s AI and robotics institutes. These events underscore how deeply AI alliances now intertwine with South Korea’s industrial and cultural landscape.
