Sludge Processing Plant Construction Begins in Ulaanbaatar

Date:

Ulaanbaatar will start building a new sludge processing plant next year to improve waste management and reduce pollution. Specifically, the sludge processing plant will treat, dry, and incinerate sludge from the Central Wastewater Treatment facility. Furthermore, this project forms part of the city’s 24 mega initiatives designed to support sustainable development.

The construction site will occupy 40,000 square meters in the 20th khoroo of Songinokhairkhan District. Importantly, it is located adjacent to the existing wastewater treatment facility. Additionally, local authorities have approved the feasibility study, which was completed by the Construction Development Center. At present, the city is preparing to launch a tender for construction.

This sludge processing plant aims to handle an average of 250 cubic meters of sludge daily. Moreover, it will incinerate up to 238 tonnes each day. Also, the facility will recycle approximately 843,200 cubic meters of sludge annually. To minimize environmental harm, the plant will use advanced air purification technology to treat emissions from incineration.

Officials emphasize the importance of this sludge processing plant for reducing pollution in soil, water, and air. Therefore, proper disposal and treatment of sludge are critical for protecting the city’s environment. Besides waste reduction, the project supports reuse initiatives and aims to generate energy from processed sludge.

The plant will be developed through a public-private partnership, which is expected to bring in investment and expertise. Consequently, city leaders believe the project will create new employment opportunities, benefiting the local economy.

Environmental experts have praised the initiative as a crucial step toward sustainable urban waste management. In addition, the sludge processing plant aligns with global efforts to modernize wastewater treatment and reduce landfill reliance.

Looking ahead, Ulaanbaatar plans to complete the tender process soon and begin construction next year. Ideally, the city hopes the facility will start operating within the next few years. Once completed, it will serve as a model for other regions in Mongolia seeking to improve their waste treatment systems.

In summary, the sludge processing plant project marks a significant move toward addressing Ulaanbaatar’s growing waste challenges. Ultimately, it demonstrates a commitment to environmental protection and resource recovery.
