South Korean Retail Investors Sell Over 1 Trillion Won in Overseas Stocks

Date:

South Korean retail investors dumped more than 1 trillion won ($641 million) in overseas stocks during the first week of June, data showed Sunday, intensifying a retail sell-off that may signal a shift back to the domestic market. Net sales reached $793.67 million from Monday through Friday, according to the Korea Securities Depository. This retail sell-off extended a streak that began in April, fueling expectations of a homeward rotation of capital.

The weekly figure far surpassed the $469 million net sold in April. Moreover, it nearly matched May’s total outflow of $939.77 million. If the retail sell-off persists through the end of June, the streak will stretch to three consecutive months. That would mark the longest sequence since the April-July period of 2023. Meanwhile, the three major U.S. indexes the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow all touched record highs during the same stretch. Yet Korean investors continued to withdraw funds from foreign equities.

Concurrently, South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index breached the 8,000-point milestone in late May. Hopes of a U.S.-Iran peace deal powered the rally, making local shares more attractive. Furthermore, semiconductor stocks have spearheaded the domestic market’s record-breaking surge. As a result, market watchers expect some of the repatriated money to flow into these chipmakers. Analysts describe the shift as a strategic rotation rather than pure risk aversion. Additionally, the trend mirrors a broader global recalibration of investor portfolios.

Looking ahead, the pace of the retail sell-off hinges on whether the KOSPI sustains its momentum. If local equities continue to climb, the outflow from overseas markets could accelerate as traders chase domestic returns. The depository data underscores how quickly retail sentiment can pivot. For now, the numbers indicate that Korean investors are increasingly betting on their home market. The upcoming weeks will reveal whether this rotation solidifies into a durable trend or merely a short-term tactical move.
