Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen announced Wednesday that she has no plans to run for KMT chair. She addressed members of the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce in Taipei. During her speech, she emphasized her commitment to finishing her term as mayor.
The KMT leadership election is scheduled for October. Although incumbent Chair Eric Chu confirmed he will not run, no clear successor has emerged. Some observers considered Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen the most likely candidate for the role. They also speculated she could be a contender for the 2028 presidential elections.
Despite this speculation, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen made it clear she will focus on her duties in Taichung. She explained that she signed a contract requiring her to complete her mayoral term. Her second term began after her reelection in 2022 and will conclude in December 2026.
Moreover, Lu highlighted her approach to leadership. She said she never discussed politics, party affairs, or elections while performing mayoral duties. She added that her commitment to the city guided her decision not to pursue the KMT chairmanship.
