Taipei has welcomed the first new train arrival from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem. The six-carriage high-capacity train reached the Port of Taipei yesterday. This marks the first of ten such trains ordered for the city’s expanding metro network. Consequently, this new train arrival will help meet growing passenger demand across multiple lines. The vessel completed a three-day, 1,200-kilometer voyage from the Port of Masan. Each train costs NT$590 million, or approximately US$18.79 million.
The new train arrival features a redesigned interior based on human-centric transportation concepts. Continuous longitudinal seating widens the aisles and optimizes passenger flow. New passenger information displays and upgraded driving control systems enhance the ride. Therefore, this new train arrival promises a more comfortable commuting experience. After clearing customs, workers will transport the six carriages to the Beitou Depot. They will begin moving them in batches starting late tonight. A technical team from Hyundai Rotem will then connect and assemble the carriages.
This new train arrival will enter commercial service around the middle of next year. TRTC officials have not yet decided which specific MRT lines will receive the new trains. To ensure flawless integration with old systems, the train will conduct uncrewed test runs. These tests will occur on main lines during off-peak hours. The company will only start commercial operations after passing all safety benchmarks. Consequently, the new train arrival represents a major logistical achievement for Taipei.
Hyundai Rotem built the train at its Changwon plant in South Korea. Workers loaded each carriage individually onto the cargo ship. They tightly wrapped each main body in protective foam and shrink wrap. Waterproof and dustproof canvas secured the precision electromechanical systems. These measures protect against high salinity, humidity, and ocean sway. Each packaged carriage measures about 24 meters long, 3.6 meters wide, and 3.6 meters high. It weighs up to 42 tonnes. Standard flatbed trucks cannot handle such large dimensions. Therefore, specially modified trailers will transport each carriage one by one.
The new train arrival comes as Taipei’s metro network continues expanding rapidly. Ridership has rebounded strongly following the pandemic period. Existing trains often operate at near capacity during peak hours. The ten new trains will significantly increase overall system capacity. TRTC invested heavily in this procurement to improve service quality. The human-centric interior design focuses on passenger comfort and safety. Wider aisles allow easier movement during crowded conditions. Longitudinal seating also creates more standing space for rush hour travelers.
Looking ahead, the remaining nine new trains will arrive in phases over the coming months. Each new train arrival will undergo the same careful unpacking and assembly process. TRTC plans to conduct extensive testing before any train carries passengers. The manufacturer’s technical team will remain in Taipei throughout the commissioning period. Local engineers will receive training on maintaining the new systems. The new train arrival also demonstrates growing Taiwan–South Korea transportation cooperation. Moreover, Hyundai Rotem has supplied rolling stock to many global cities. Taipei’s selection of the company reflects confidence in its technology. Once operational, these trains will serve Taipei residents for decades. The new train arrival marks the beginning of a major fleet upgrade. Commuters can expect smoother rides and more reliable service soon.
