Taipei Rainbow Crossing Gets Vibrant Refresh

Date:

The Taipei rainbow crossing, a vibrant symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, reopened on Saturday. It received a fresh coat of paint and now looks brighter than ever. Located at exit 6 of the Ximen Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Station, this colorful pedestrian crossing adds life to the busy Ximending neighborhood. Both residents and visitors warmly welcomed the refreshed look. The crossing proudly features six vivid colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

Since Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in 2019, the Taipei rainbow crossing has become more than just a crosswalk. It stands as a strong and visible reminder of gender equality and gay rights. Civic groups and local politicians worked closely to create this symbol of support for the LGBTQ+ community. The area around the crossing, including the well-known Red Theater, has long been a hub for gay bars and entertainment venues. This history made the location perfect for showcasing the colorful rainbow design.

However, over time, the Taipei rainbow crossing’s colors began to fade. Weather conditions and heavy foot traffic caused the paint to wear down. As the colors dulled, the crossing lost some of its vibrant impact. In response, city officials decided to temporarily close the crossing on July 8 for a complete restoration. Maintenance crews repainted the crossing with bright, fresh colors. Additionally, they rotated the word “TAIPEI” on the pavement to face a new direction, adding a subtle but noticeable change.

Since its reopening, the refreshed Taipei rainbow crossing has quickly attracted many visitors. People flock to the spot to take selfies and celebrate Taipei’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The crossing continues to serve as a joyful meeting point and photo opportunity for locals and tourists alike. Many residents have also voiced their desire for the city to maintain the crossing regularly. They suggest making upkeep a recurring event to keep the colors vibrant and the symbol strong.

In conclusion, the Taipei rainbow crossing now shines brightly once again. It reinforces Taipei’s dedication to LGBTQ+ visibility and pride in a lively and meaningful way. This renewed symbol continues to inspire both locals and visitors in the Ximending district. Moving forward, the city plans to listen carefully to community feedback and maintain this beloved landmark for years to come.
