Coast Guard Ships: Taiwan Launches Advanced Vessels

Date:

Taiwan’s President William Lai called for bipartisan support for coast guard ships during the launch of two new vessels on Saturday. Meanwhile, the event took place at CSBC Corp’s shipyard in Kaohsiung. Importantly, it marks a major step in Taiwan’s maritime defense strategy.

The Taipei is the fourth and final Chiayi-class offshore patrol vessel. It displaces about 4,000 tonnes. Lai said the ship is part of a 2018 plan to expand Taiwan’s coast guard fleet to 141 vessels by 2027. Additionally, the Siraya is the Coast Guard Administration’s first ocean patrol vessel. It can operate in high-latitude waters such as the northern Pacific.

These new coast guard ships enhance Taiwan’s ability to monitor territorial waters. Moreover, they strengthen responses to illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Lai emphasized that the vessels support national security, law enforcement, and navigational safety amid rising regional tensions.

The Chiayi-class ships carry two 20mm cannons, a 2.75-inch rocket launcher, and three water cannons. Furthermore, they include medical facilities, quarantine areas, surgical suites, and beds for humanitarian operations. An elevator-equipped helicopter hangar allows aviation operations. In addition, fin stabilizers and auxiliary propulsion units improve maneuverability and crew comfort.

The Siraya weighs 5,000 tonnes and has an all-steel hull. Its patrol variant has a 20mm cannon, uncrewed aerial vehicles, and three water cannons for firefighting. Meanwhile, the supply ship variant carries containers, boats, and equipment for rescue, law enforcement, and transport.

Lai highlighted Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its homegrown defense industry. He also noted that seven proposed bills aim to protect undersea internet cables from sabotage and natural hazards.

CSBC confirmed it has delivered all 15 100-tonne vessels, four of six 1,000-tonne vessels, and all four Chiayi-class 4,000-tonne vessels. Consequently, the Taipei will join the CGA’s Central Sector Flotilla. It will also take part in upcoming maritime exercises as part of a friendship flotilla.

Lai thanked the Coast Guard Administration and CSBC for their dedication. Ultimately, he stressed that these coast guard ships are essential to safeguarding Taiwan’s sovereignty and maritime safety.
