Taiwan Democracy Gains Support in Germany

Date:

Taiwan democracy became the focus during former President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to Germany this week. German officials emphasized that the Taiwanese people must determine the island’s future through freely elected representatives. The message came during a tour of the German parliament building, the Reichstag, highlighting shared democratic values.

Tsai arrived in Berlin on Sunday and delivered a keynote speech at the Berlin Freedom Conference. She discussed the threats facing democracies and Taiwan’s experience defending freedom. The next day, she attended a tea gathering at the Bundestag hosted by Till Steffen, chairman of the German-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Steffen highlighted that Germany’s reunification was decided by parliaments freely elected in East and West Germany. He said Taiwan democracy should follow the same democratic principle, allowing the people to decide their future. Former friendship group chairman Klaus-Peter Willsch, defense specialist Roderich Kiesewetter, and Parliamentary State Secretary Michael Brand also joined the event.

Tsai stressed the opportunities for cooperation between Taiwan and Germany. She cited Germany’s industrial capabilities and Taiwan’s technological strength, particularly in semiconductors. She called for both countries to work together on technology, economic development, and security.

During the visit, Tsai observed the Der Bevolkerung art installation at the Reichstag, where lawmakers place a bag of earth from their constituency. She noted the symbolism shows that citizens should decide their nation’s fate.

In an interview with Die Welt, Tsai reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening self-defense. She highlighted Taiwan’s critical role in global technology, especially semiconductors, which remain indispensable in the near future. She said that with democratic partners’ support, Taiwan can move from “Taiwan can help” to “Taiwan is supporting” the global community.

Before her visit, Tsai emphasized Taiwan’s dedication to freedom and democracy as a reliable member of the international community. She stated that the island would continue cooperating with Europe and other like-minded nations to advance democratic values.

Taiwan democracy emerged as the central theme of Tsai’s visit. German officials voiced strong support and reinforced the importance of democratic self-determination for the island.
