Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced that entertainer and TV show host Huang An will have his Taiwanese citizenship revoked immediately if it is confirmed that he holds a Chinese ID card.
Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang said Thursday that over 40 Taiwanese citizens are currently under investigation for holding Chinese identity cards. So far, 14 individuals have already had their household registrations revoked, leading to the cancellation of their Taiwanese National Health Insurance, passports, and IDs. According to Liu, reinstating household registration for these individuals will be challenging.
Liu noted that around 40 people are also under investigation for publicly advocating China’s use of force to annex Taiwan. The number of cases varies daily based on reports from the public and other sources. Liu emphasized that both MAC and the National Immigration Agency will thoroughly examine cases involving either Chinese spouses or Taiwanese nationals suspected of obtaining Chinese identification. Those under suspicion may be summoned for questioning.
When reporters asked if Huang was among the 14 whose household registrations had already been revoked, Liu declined to confirm, citing privacy concerns.
MAC Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng noted that Huang, who currently has an entertainment career in China, has frequently sparked criticism in Taiwan due to his controversial statements. Chiu added that MAC will investigate whether Huang has collaborated directly with China’s Communist Party, government, or military.
